Situated halfway between Cromwell and Wanaka, the biggest problem on Jason’s dairy support block is the wind that gusts right across Central Otago, especially in spring.
In order to provide some resistance that allows for fodder beet to establish themselves in the undeveloped soil, we generated a long term plan that utilises cover crops that protect crops in their infancy. By timing the planting of both crops and meeting at least once a week during this crucial period to walk the paddock, we’re able to successfully co-ordinate the removal of cover crops and plan stock rotation for winter together.
